Deep dive: The “35 Best Spicy Books of All Time, According to Librarians” list recently published by Parade Magazine ( August 16, 2026). 🚨 Friendly reminder I’ll never share my spiciest books list: @Talia | DC, Books & Black Biz The media outlet interviewed 11 librarians across the country and shared a widely-used 5 chili pepper spice level rubric. This list of spiciest books isn’t surprising on many fronts. The list is mostly comprised of white, straight and heteronormative traditionally-published and widely-available books championed by the surface layer BookTok and end caps at your brick-and-mortar bookstore or big-box retailer. In my reading and opinion, indie publishing is at the forefront of what spice can be. My rating for spice level is less about how much intimacy is in a book or how descriptive the act is. I’m looking at the types of intimacy and if it’s pushing the boundaries of what we’ve been socialized around the act and our role in it. #booktok #blackbooktok #spicybooks #spicybooktoks #booktalk
