This is Where the Serpent Lives

by Daniyal Mueenuddin

From the bustling streets of Lahore to the stark, feudal farms of Punjab, Daniyal Mueenuddin weaves a sweeping portrait of contemporary Pakistan through the intertwined lives of a dozen unforgettable characters. Orphaned street‑kid Yazid climbs into the inner circle of Colonel Atar, a powerful industrialist, only to have his newfound loyalty tested by betrayal and shifting allegiances. On the colonel’s rural estate, Saqib, the gardener’s son, is thrust into managing a pioneering agribusiness; his ambition drives him into conflict with corrupt police and the brutal hierarchies of caste and capital. Around them, love and violence collide—Hisham’s wealthy family, a teacher named Gazala, and a brother’s rivalry for a woman’s heart—all illuminate the fragile balance between moral choice and survival. Mueenuddin’s lyrical, tightly‑crafted narrative captures the stark contrasts of wealth and poverty, honor and desperation, making this a resonant, unforgettable exploration of power, loyalty, and the human spirit.
