The Girl with the Louding Voice

by Abi Daré · 2019

In rural Nigeria, fourteen‑year‑old Adunni dreams of school, a better home, and a voice that can be heard beyond the walls of her village. When her father sells her into a marriage with an elderly man, her hopes seem shattered. Tragedy forces her to flee to Lagos, where she endures the harsh world of a wealthy household as a house‑girl, confronting cruelty and exploitation at every turn. Yet Adunni’s spirit never quiets; she clings to the belief that a "louding voice"—a voice that speaks loudly for herself and for other girls—can rise from even the darkest circumstances. Through humor, heartbreak, and fierce determination, Abi Daré paints a vivid portrait of resilience, showing how one young woman's courage can inspire a chorus of change.
