In the Dream House

by Carmen Maria Machado · 2019

In In the Dream House, award‑winning writer Carmen Maria Machado transforms a personal memoir into a daring literary experiment. She recounts the arc of a volatile, charismatic partnership that began as a seemingly safe lesbian romance and spiraled into a pattern of psychological and emotional abuse. Each chapter adopts a different narrative trope—a haunted house, an erotica plot, a bildungsroman—allowing Machado to dissect the relationship from fresh angles while interrogating the myths that surround queer love, domestic violence, and the stories we tell ourselves. Through razor‑sharp wit and relentless curiosity, Machado weaves in cultural touchstones—from fairy tales and Disney villains to Star Trek and legal precedent—building a broader picture of how abuse is hidden, normalized, and resisted. The result is a haunting, incisive work that expands the possibilities of memoir, offering both a deeply personal reckoning and a powerful critique of the structures that enable intimate terror.
