On Sundays, She Picked Flowers

by Yah Yah Scholfield · 2022

After fleeing an abusive mother, Judith Rice seeks refuge in the tangled woods of rural Georgia. A kindly innkeeper offers her a crumbling cottage, and there she establishes a quiet Sunday ritual of picking wildflowers—a habit that becomes a lifeline as she learns the forest is alive with strange, unseen beings. Over thirteen solitary years she tends the house, comforts its lingering ghosts, and transforms herself into a healer rooted in the land. Her fragile peace shatters when Nemoira, an enigmatic and unsettling stranger, arrives, awakening buried urges and forcing Judith to confront the violent legacy of her bloodline. In this haunting Southern Gothic debut, themes of metamorphosis, retribution, and the fragile beauty of self‑creation intertwine, delivering a lyrical, suspense‑filled journey of trauma, love, and the strange magic of the woods.
