Time Shelter

by Georgi Gospodinov · 2022

In a world where memory is fading, a nameless narrator becomes the assistant to Gaustine, a mysterious “vagrant in time” who has built a peculiar clinic in Zurich that lets Alzheimer’s patients walk back through the decades. Each floor of the clinic is a meticulously recreated era—1960s furniture, 1940s shirt buttons, the scent of apricot blossoms and even the fleeting quality of afternoon light—offering patients a chance to retrieve lost moments. As the narrator gathers the fragments of the past, the novel spirals into a playful yet profound meditation on how we measure time, how we cling to history, and what it means to live in the present. Georgi Gospodinov blends absurd humor with haunting insight, turning a speculative premise into a lyrical exploration of memory, identity, and the fragile architecture of our lives.
