The henna artist

by Alka Joshi · 2020

In 1950s Jaipur, seventeen‑year‑old Lakshmi flees an abusive marriage and builds a new life as the city’s most sought‑after henna artist. Her intricate designs and quiet wisdom make her confidante to the elite women of the pink city, yet the secrets she keeps for them are her own. When her long‑lost husband reappears with a spirited young girl—Lakshmi’s unknown sister—her carefully guarded independence is threatened. Amid gossip, jealousy, and the clash of tradition and modernity, Lakshmi must balance ambition with loyalty, using her art to empower herself and the women around her while fighting to protect the fragile freedom she has fought so hard to claim.
