Jane Eyre, first published on 16 October 1847 under the pseudonym Currer Bell, is Charlotte Brontë’s enduring classic. The novel follows the bildungsroman arc of its eponymous heroine, an orphan who endures a harsh childhood at Gateshead, a bleak charity school at Lowood, and later becomes governess at Thornfield Hall. There she falls in love with the brooding Mr Rochester, only to uncover his dark secret. Through trials of love, morality, and self‑discovery, Jane asserts her independence, famously declaring, “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.” Combining Gothic atmosphere, Victorian social critique, and feminist themes, the work remains a staple of high‑school curricula and literary study guides.
