In 1899, talented scientific illustrator Sonia Wilson is left adrift after her father’s death, her prospects as a woman in science evaporating. When the reclusive Dr. Halder invites her to illustrate his extensive insect collection at his isolated North Carolina manor, she sees a lifeline—and a chance to put her art to work. Yet the quiet woods conceal a horror far darker than any devil. Animals behave oddly, locals whisper of “blood thieves,” and the fate of Halder’s vanished wife looms over the estate. With the help of the housekeeper and a local healer, Sonia uncovers Halder’s grotesque experiments: parasitic maggots that burrow into human flesh, turning his entomological breakthroughs into a nightmarish sacrifice. As the parasite spreads, Sonia must decide whether she can halt the monstrosity before she becomes its next victim.
