Uncle Paul

by Celia Fremlin · 1960

When Meg and Isabel were children, their half‑sister Mildred married a charming stranger who vanished after being exposed as a bigamist and murderer. Fifteen years later Uncle Paul is due to be released from prison, and the three women are forced to confront the nightmare he left behind. A family holiday at the seaside village where Mildred and Paul once honeymooned turns into a claustrophobic arena of suspicion, betrayal and revenge. As old wounds reopen and strange footsteps echo through the dunes, each sister must decide whether the threat comes from Paul’s return or from the secrets they keep from each other. Celia Fremlin weaves razor‑sharp prose, dark humor and psychological insight into a tightly plotted thriller that keeps the reader’s curiosity on edge until its startling, unforgettable climax.
