Kin follows Vernice and Annie, two motherless girls raised together in the small Louisiana town of Honeysuckle. Their lives diverge after high school: Vernice escapes to Spelman College, marries into affluence, and builds a stable future, while Annie obsessively searches for her absent mother, leading her into danger, love, and a fight for survival. The novel explores motherhood, friendship, sisterhood, and the complexities of being a Black woman in the American South, weaving themes of race, class, identity, and the lasting impact of loss.
