Foe

by Iain Reid · 2018

In a climate‑scarred world, Junior and Henrietta have carved out a quiet, self‑sufficient life on one of the last farms. Their routine solitude is shattered when a stranger arrives with a baffling summons: Junior has been randomly selected for a distant, indefinite mission, and arrangements have already been made so that Henrietta will never be alone while he’s gone. Instead, she will be kept company by someone eerily familiar. As the departure looms, both husband and wife grapple with unsettling questions about identity, agency, and the very nature of their relationship. Iain Reid’s spare, tension‑filled prose builds a psychological thriller that twists reality and leaves readers questioning what is real long after the final page.
