Reflection: A Twisted Tale

by Elizabeth Lim · 2018

When Captain Shang falls mortally wounded in battle, Mulan must venture beyond the living world to rescue him. Guided by Shang’s loyal lion guardian Shi‑Shi, she descends into Diyu, the Chinese Underworld ruled by the stern King Yama. There, she faces a maze of haunting trials, fierce spirits, and a ticking clock—she must locate Shang’s wandering soul and escape before sunrise, or become a permanent prisoner of the underworld. All the while Mulan remains hidden behind her soldier disguise, Ping, and wrestles with whether to reveal her true self to the man she loves. In this fourth entry of the bestselling Twisted Tale series, Elizabeth Lim blends mythic adventure with heartfelt conflict, asking if love and identity can survive even death’s darkest realm.
