The Devil Takes You Home

by Gabino Iglesias · 2022

When Mario’s young daughter falls gravely ill and his marriage teeters on the brink, desperation drives him into a world he never imagined. To pay mounting medical bills, he reluctantly becomes a hitman, discovering a dark, unsettling talent for violence. After a personal tragedy shatters his fragile life, a final, high‑stakes job offers a chance at redemption—or death: hijack a cartel’s cash shipment before it crosses into Mexico. Joined by an old friend and the cartel insider Juanca, Mario embarks on a near‑suicidal trek across the endless Texas landscape and the border, where hidden motives surface and nightmarish encounters defy explanation. The journey promises either $200,000 or a bullet in the skull, but whatever the outcome, Mario will never return the same. A panoramic neo‑noir odyssey that blends southern grit with boundary‑pushing storytelling, this thriller will grip fans of Breaking Bad, Blacktop Wasteland, and Stephen Graham Jones.
