Train Dreams

by Denis Johnson · 2011

Train Dreams is an epic in miniature that follows the life of Robert Grainer, a day laborer in the American West at the turn of the 20th century. As an ordinary man living through extraordinary times, Grainer experiences profound personal loss and witnesses the radical industrial and social transformations of America. The narrative, set against the backdrop of the Idaho Panhandle, explores the disappearance of a traditional way of life through the lens of a man who fells forests and builds bridges. Denis Johnson’s prose blends realism with the metaphysical, capturing Grainer’s journey from a participant in frontier violence to a solitary figure navigating a changing world filled with ghosts, natural calamities, and the relentless expansion of the railroad.
