House of Leaves

House of Leaves follows a family living on Ash Tree Lane whose home inexplicably expands with cold hallways and impossible rooms. Blind scholar Zampanò writes a manuscript analyzing a documentary called The Navidson Record that captures the house’s shifting interior. After Zampanò’s death, Johnny Truant assembles the manuscript, adds his own footnotes, and spirals into his own troubled narrative. The novel weaves domestic scenes, expedition footage, academic debate, and Johnny’s marginalia, while its unconventional layout—rotated pages, sparse spreads, layered footnotes, and shifting fonts—makes the physical book part of the story. Themes of labyrinthine space, unreliable narration, media truth, home and alienation, and textual uncertainty create a mind‑bending, immersive horror‑thriller that redefines the boundaries of a novel.
