Confusion

Confusion is a novella by Austrian writer Stefan Zweig, first published in German in 1927 as *Verwirrung der Gefühle*. The story is narrated as a confession of an elderly professor recalling a pivotal episode from his youth. A wayward young student, sent to a provincial university, becomes enthralled by a brilliant professor’s lecture and develops an intense intellectual and emotional attachment to the older man and his much younger wife. The student offers to help the professor complete his scholarly work, but the mentor’s erratic behavior—alternating encouragement, coldness, and sudden rage—leaves the student wounded and bewildered. The professor’s wife ultimately intervenes, helping the young man understand the tangled feelings that have arisen. Zweig uses the tight novella form to dramatize the clash between heart and mind, exploring themes of intellectual intoxication, sublimated desire, and the power dynamics of mentor‑student bonds.
