The only woman in the room

by Marie Benedict · 2019

Marie Benedict’s riveting narrative uncovers the hidden life of Hedy Lamarr, the 1940s Hollywood star whose dazzling beauty masked a brilliant scientific mind. Married to an Austrian arms dealer, Lamarr overhears Nazi plans and, using her intellect, engineers a daring escape from a castle in disguise. Arriving in Hollywood, she becomes a screen legend while secretly developing a frequency‑hopping technology that could cripple the Third Reich and lay the groundwork for modern wireless communication. Benedict weaves espionage, romance, and the struggle of a woman whose genius was dismissed in a male‑dominated world, delivering a page‑turning tribute to a forgotten pioneer of science.
