One of Our Kind

by Nicola Yoon · 2024

When Jasmyn and King Williams learn they’re expecting their second child, they relocate to Liberty, a glossy, all‑Black gated community in California that promises a utopian haven for progressive families. King quickly embraces the town’s wellness‑center culture and the promise of a harmonious enclave, while Jasmyn finds the reality unsettling—neighbors seem more preoccupied with spa appointments than social justice, and the community’s veneer of liberation feels hollow. As her pregnancy deepens, Jasmyn uncovers a chilling secret about Liberty’s founders that threatens not only her family’s safety but the very ideals the town claims to uphold. Nicola Yoon delivers a tense, thought‑provoking thriller that blends dystopian horror with sharp social commentary, asking how far a society will go to protect its illusion of freedom.
