Fortress in the eye of time

by C. J. Cherryh · 1995

In the ruins of a shattered castle, an ancient wizard of the Old Magic whispers forgotten incantations, shaping a young man from light and shadow. This newly‑born figure, Tristen, is sent east on a quest the elder can no longer undertake—to right the lingering wounds of a centuries‑old wizard war and, perhaps, ignite new conflicts. As Tristen navigates courts and battlefields, he becomes the instrument of Mauryl, a king‑maker whose influence has guided humanity for a millennium. The novel weaves a tale of destiny and ambition, where a king’s broken promise, a wizard’s lingering desire, and a young man’s innocence collide in a struggle that stretches beyond time itself. Cherryh blends legend‑like grandeur with intimate, heartfelt moments, delivering a haunting, richly layered fantasy that explores the cost of power and the fragile hope of love.
