The Housekeeper and the Professor

by Yoko Ogawa · 2009

When a brilliant mathematics professor suffers a head injury that limits his short‑term memory to just eighty minutes, his world collapses into a perpetual present. Hired to care for him, a young housekeeper and her ten‑year‑old son become his daily companions, re‑introducing themselves each morning as if for the first time. Through gentle riddles and elegant equations—whether calculating shoe sizes or birthdays—the professor weaves numbers into a quiet poetry that binds the three strangers together. As memory fades, their shared moments become a fragile yet profound family, showing how love, curiosity, and the simple logic of everyday life can create lasting connections beyond the limits of the mind.
