Pretty A Memoir

by KB Brookins · 2024

In *Pretty*, award‑winning Black trans writer K.B. Brookins offers a fiercely honest memoir that maps the tangled terrain of queerness, Black masculinity, and race. Growing up in Texas, Brookins confronts the daily paradox of being read as a Black American man while official documents label her female, and her own heart resists easy categorisation. Through vivid personal narrative, cultural criticism, and the stories of other Black transgender masculine folks, she unpacks the beauty and toxicity of Black masculinity, the weight of assumptions, and the relentless work of unlearning them. The book is both a tender love letter to herself and a rallying call for a community too often rendered invisible, inviting readers to witness a powerful bildungsroman of self‑definition and transformation.
