Jane Austen

Jane Austen (1775‑1817) was an English novelist whose works critique the British landed gentry of her time. After an early, unpublished draft of *First Impressions* (1796‑1797) was rejected, she revised the manuscript while living in Chawton, Hampshire, and saw it published as *Pride and Prejudice* in January 1813. Austen’s keen observations of social class, marriage, and gender dynamics have made her a lasting literary figure.
