Marlen Haushofer
Marlen Haushofer was born in Frauenstein, Molln, Austria on 11 April 1920. She attended a Catholic gymnasium that was later turned into a public school under the Nazi regime, then studied German language and literature in Vienna (1940) and Graz. She married dentist Manfred Haushofer in 1941; they divorced in 1950, remarried in 1957, and had two sons together. Though she won literary prizes during her career, Haushofer fell into obscurity until the women’s movement revived interest in her work, especially for its focus on women’s roles in a male‑dominated society. *Die Wand* (1963) is considered her masterpiece, exploring isolation and self‑reliance in a post‑war context.
