Jacqueline Harpman
Jacqueline Harpman was born in Etterbeek, Belgium, in 1929. Half‑Jewish, her family fled to Casablanca during the Nazi occupation and returned after World War II. She studied French literature at the University of Brussels, began training as a physician but was forced to stop due to tuberculosis, and later became a psychoanalyst in 1980. Harpman's background in psychoanalysis and her experience of exile inform the haunting, existential tone of her work.
