Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860‑1935) was an American writer and early feminist whose work often examined the social and psychological constraints placed on women. Best known for *The Yellow Wallpaper*, Gilman used fiction to critique the medical and societal treatment of women’s mental health in the late nineteenth century. The story includes an afterword by Elaine R. Hedges in some editions.
