Shirley Jackson

Shirley Jackson (1916‑1965) was an American writer born in San Francisco and raised in Rochester, New York. After graduating from Syracuse University she married literary critic Stanley Edgar Hyman and settled in North Bennington, Vermont, where she wrote most of her work. Known for her sharp, unsettling stories such as “The Lottery” and The Haunting of Hill House, Jackson struggled with agoraphobia and obesity later in life. She died of heart failure at age 48, leaving a legacy of influential gothic and horror literature.
