In the archipelago of the Nominomi Sea, the legend of the 'dragonfruit'—a seadragon egg—promises to undo a person's greatest sorrow, but always at a steep price. Hanalei of Tamarind, exiled after her father stole a seadragon egg, spends her years studying the majestic creatures. When an encounter with a dragon offers her a chance to return home and right a past wrong, she reunites with her childhood friend, Prince Samahtitamahenele (Sam). Sam, the last prince of a matriarchal society, faces the pressure to marry or find a cure for his mother's decade-long illness. Together, they embark on a perilous quest to find the dragonfruit, battling enemies and the dangerous, unpredictable power of the artifact itself.
