Set in Norfolk in AD 990, *Mere* follows the infirmarian Hilda and the austere Abbess Sigeburg as they lead an isolated convent of holy sisters deep in the fens, cut off by a treacherous marsh called the mere. When a young servant boy disappears into the water, rumors of a curse spread, food stores dwindle, and harsh winters threaten survival. The arrival of Sister Wulfrun, a former thegn’s wife with a mysterious vision, forces the community to confront both Christian doctrine and lingering pagan beliefs. As fear and superstition rise, Hilda finds herself torn between duty and a forbidden love for Wulfrun, navigating power struggles, supernatural menace, and the relentless threat of the mere itself.
