Ryunosuke Akutagawa

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa (1892‑1927) was a pioneering pre‑war Japanese writer whose technically virtuoso short stories earned him a broad foreign readership. He combined traditional Japanese material with a modern, impressionistic style, producing works that range from eerie folklore to stark, autobiographical reflections on madness and melancholy. His stories inspired Akira Kurosawa’s celebrated film “Rashōmon,” cementing Akutagawa’s place as one of Japan’s most influential modernist authors.
