Michael Shaara
Michael Shaara (1928‑1988) was an American writer of science‑fiction, sports fiction, and historical fiction. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey to Italian immigrant parents, he graduated from Rutgers University in 1951 and served as a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean War. After stints as an amateur boxer, police officer, and science‑fiction magazine contributor, Shaara taught literature at Florida State University. His novel The Killer Angels, a vivid recreation of the Battle of Gettysburg, won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He died at age 36 from a heart attack.
